Andrea Brown Dance

Andrea Brown has been dancing and performing since she was 3 years old.  She has studied a minimum of 15 years in each of the major disciplines (ballet, Graham, tap & jazz) and performed in ballet, modern, & jazz companies throughout the USA, Europe, and the West Indies.  She received strong classical ballet training from Enid Ricardeau and Chrisopher Flynn in Detroit, Michigan, and Marjorie Mussman in New York City.   Her modern dance training began in Limon and Cunningham in Michigan, and later changed to Graham technique after concentrated study with Mary Hinkson in Detroit, Germany, and New York City.  Extensive credit for her jazz training goes to Lynn Simonson with additional training from George Faison, Fred Benjamin, and Alvin McDuffie.  Her performing credits include soloist with Lynn Simonson’s UNCOMPANY and The Larry Richardson Dance Company as well as regional theatre, TV, and film, where she can be seen as the headless dancing skeleton in “The Evil Dead II.”

Before spending the last 26 years teaching at Broadway Dance Center, Andrea was on the faculty of Morelli Ballet in NYC for many years, as well as The Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.  Her varied background has made her a favorite guest artist in the dance departments of many colleges where jazz would not normally be accepted as a legitimate form of dance.  During that time, she was commissioned by many colleges and dance groups to create “concert” jazz dance works (USA and Europe), but it was choreographing for her own students that gave her the most satisfaction.

Teaching and coaching is where Andrea now prefers to spend her energy.  She has been instrumental in many actors and singers securing parts on Broadway and she continues to be a popular teacher for not only actors and singers, but also lawyers, accountants, bankers, etc... anyone with the desire to learn and improve.  

One of her greatest rewards for teaching was the establishment of The Andrea Brown Dance Scholarship by an anonymous donor whose life had been enriched by taking her class.  Several students were able to continue their studies because of this scholarship.

Although Andrea has enjoyed teaching in Europe, Scandinavia, and the West Indies, and has been a regular in the summer courses of France for the past several years, she prefers to stay in New York City and teach her devoted students.
